The history of Fairfield's inclusion in the Shire and City of Heidelberg was not always comfortable. The Mercury, 16th May, 1889 says "The residents of Heidelberg have no sympathy in common with Fairfield and vice versa." It goes on to suggest that some residents thought Fairfield should sever from Heidelberg and "form a first-class borough" along with Alphington. For various reasons, severance did not take place until the mid twentieth century.
